blog 2.1

The beginning of my leather adventure has actually gone fairly well actually, compared to the beginning of my guitar catastrophe. I have been using some tools and supplies from the Ag shop with help and guidance from Mr.Rehbein. I started out with just a scrap piece of  leather to get my wits about me with the tools and hammer and such. I then moved on an began to work on my drink coaster. This is very simple and is basically just more tooling practice but more pressure to not mess up. One thing about leather work is you get one shot at making a good stamp. There is no leather eraser. The stamp you make is the stamp you get. I finished the coaster which was very simple. I did I pattern called a basket pattern. This is very common on saddles and thing that are large and need covered. This pattern can cover large amounts of surface. I am now starting on a pair of hobbles

  1. This is a very cool project! What other items will you be creating? How much does the leather cost? I have always been curious to how this artwork is done! You should video yourself making the hobbles!

  2. I'm glad to see you are so excited about this project! Are you wanting to learn about specific tools or just whatever the farmshop has? Also, are you going to be just stamping your future projects or will you include stitching etc..?

    1. I do plan on doing some stitching, but nothing to crazy. The hobbles will have a little bit of stitching.

  3. This is so cool! My grandpa used to do this! He would make belts, wallets, you name it. My aunt actually gave me his old stamp kit, I have never used it but it would be cool to! Do you have to soak the leather in something before you begin? In order for it to be soft enough to stamp? I remember my aunt telling me about that.

  4. Hi Garrett, sounds like you are living the American dream with leather work. I am glad you found something that can benefit you by giving you new material items and a new trade you can continue to do. I don't know much about your area but it sounds like fun! Keep on keepin' on Garrett.

  6. Looks like a good project! Do you plan out your design in advance or just figure it out as you go along? I tried working with leather once and was awful at it. Hope you have better luck than I did.
